Be the change. // Melanie Boling, Peer Wild.

Years ago when I was first building my international NGO, Peer Wild, I knew that there were certain things I wanted to offer the indigenous communities that we would be working with. Green Energy and Clean Water were at the forefront, in addition to education. I came across this contraption that has been designed and used in Africa for years and knew that after spending weeks or months out in the field, how important clean clothes become to anyone living or working in austere conditions. It wasn’t until I spent nearly a year out in the rural mountains with no access to laundry, unless I washed what I needed by hand; waited until I could use a friend’s home; or find a laundromat back in the city, did I truly begin to understand even more so how good we have it here in western society. In countries around the globe, women are tasked with taking care of the home (which I’m not a fan of for several reasons). This includes fetching clean water that could potentially force them to walk miles to access, just to return home to wash everything by hand? Trust me, when you’re living outdoors it doesn’t matter how many times you hand wash something - it’s never as clean as it should be. I truly began to appreciate even more the luxuries that we have access to here in western society. So, I decided that I would offer this contraption, along with solar lights and water filtration systems to the communities I choose to work with through my NGO. Now that I’m in the process of simplifying my life again, I finally picked up one of these guys for myself in an effort to live a more sustainable life. Maybe it’s a cool toy that some of you can add to your RV; but in a lot of places around the globe this guy is a life-changer. I certainly know it will be in my life and I’m happy to have the ability to introduce it to others so that it can make someone else’s life a little easier.

Be the change you wish to see in the world.
